The Stocks Barn sits in the idyllic village of Wellingore situated on the Lincoln Edge Cliff. Wellingore and the surrounding 'Cliff Villages' were rated by the Sunday Times in 2022 as one of the best places to live. This includes neighbouring Navenby, Welbourn, Leadenham, Fulbeck and Caythorpe, where collectively they were among the top seven areas listed in the Midlands by the national newspaper. They also highlighted that the Lincoln Cliff may be modest in overall height, but the view from the summit is a panoramic rebuttal to anyone who claims that Lincolnshire is flat.
The Lincoln Cliff views are best seen from The Viking Way which is only 3 minutes walk from The Stocks Barn and on reaching the long distance walking route you are hit by the views from the summit to the far reaching scenery of Nottinghamshire and beyond.
The exact origin of Wellingore is somewhat uncertain, but probable theories suggest it dates back to Old English as "well + inga + ofer" roughly translates to the "promontory of the dweller by a spring or stream". Wellingore itself is an attractive village with many of the older houses built in the local limestone.
In times gone by Wellingore and in particular the High Street was a commercially vibrant fulcrum to the surrounding area. A gentle meander around the village demonstrates this as many of the older building names reflect this and the frontages clearly echo the trading nature of the street. Cobble Cottage and Saddlers Cottage were where brothers made and repaired shoes and provided saddles to locals. The Old Sweet Shop as it is known, was in fact several businesses over time: a boot and shoe shop, a fish and chip shop and also another butchers. Public Houses, which are still in existence today include The Marquis of Granby and The Red Lion are a mere 1 minute walk from The Stocks.
The Stocks is steeped in history and although there are some gaps in the timeline, what is known paints an interesting picture. The house and the barn originally date back to 1762, the barn and adjacent garage building are likely older. The forms part of the reason why the whole property forms one of the many Grade 2 listed building that exist in Wellingore.
Its name dates back to when the village stocks were relocated from the churchyard to outside the property.
The property was used for a variety of businesses. In the 1800's it is known that the building was a public house called The Mitre.
After this slaughter houses were located in the buildings on site, and the house itself was the local butchers up to the 1950's locally known as Almonds The Butchers.
